All Affiliates:

I am writing to you seeking your Local Union’s upfront commitment to purchase books, once published, of the story of Avondale Shipyard. This book is being authored by one of our own, Nick Unger.

As you all know the success of most endeavors related to organized labor in our community are in part, often largely, attributable to the involvement of the Building Trades. No example could be more evident of this than the story of the Metal Trades representation of the workers at Avondale Shipyard. In many ways it is the story of the affiliates of the building trades and our efforts, going back nearly two decades.

Once it was under the hostile anti-worker regime of Albert Bossier, then to be acquired by Litton Industries, later to be purchased by Northrup-Gruman and now today under the management of Hunnington-Ingalls, which as you know has announced the imminent closure of the facility, expected sometime in the summer of 2013. All the while, under the watchful eyes, and efforts, of what I call the New Orleans Metal Trades big brother, the New Orleans Building Trades, in other words, us.

Had it not been for our efforts, there very well could have been no story to tell. To help insure that a publisher will take Nick’s manuscript to print it is important that he have some commitments to purchase the book, thus the reason for this request. Please consider and have your Union make a commitment, preferably specific in numbers as to how many of these books, again once published, you would be willing to buy. The anticipated cost will be approximately $20 per book.

Please respond to this request ASAP by letting us know how many books you will commit to purchasing, even if you cannot commit to any. You can send this information by email (tiger@gnoaflcio.com) or fax (504-482-6958) to the Building Trades office.

Thanking you in advance for your consideration and participation in this most worthwhile cause. I remain,
Leo Damaris

02/20/2012 - The Battle for the Working Class

To all our brothers and sisters for IUPAT District Council 80 the time is NOW!!!! This presidential election along with other federal, state and local is the most important of our lifetime. Do we need or want a president who is with workers and their families or with someone who represents Wall St and Big Business? The choice is clear; we need a president who has the interest of the 99% at heart, not the 1%.

Over the past few years the Tea-Party and its ilk disguised as the Republican Party have waged war on workers. Look at Wisconsin, New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana & Ohio. Workers and their rights have been violated. They've proposed legislation to strip workers of what they bargained for. In numerous state capitols these people are attacking our unemployment benefits, lowering or doing away with workers compensation and restricting our rights.

For the benefit of ourselves and families we may consider the following approach:
1. Register to vote, you and every person of voter age in your household
2. Engage in the interview process of local candidates
3. Do they support working families' issues?
4. Contact your district council office or local union for information concerning these candidates.
5. Vote and make sure every person eligible on your jobsite and in your household VOTES

As members of a craft union we need to consider what is best for our industries and our profession. We need to vote to protect our livelihood and enhance our ability to make a living. The paycheck we earn, along with the benefits our union negotiates is a family value.
