I am writing to you seeking your Local Union’s upfront commitment to purchase books, once published, of the story of Avondale Shipyard. This book is being authored by one of our own, Nick Unger.
As you all know the success of most endeavors related to organized labor in our community are in part, often largely, attributable to the involvement of the Building Trades. No example could be more evident of this than the story of the Metal Trades representation of the workers at Avondale Shipyard. In many ways it is the story of the affiliates of the building trades and our efforts, going back nearly two decades.
Once it was under the hostile anti-worker regime of Albert Bossier, then to be acquired by Litton Industries, later to be purchased by Northrup-Gruman and now today under the management of Hunnington-Ingalls, which as you know has announced the imminent closure of the facility, expected sometime in the summer of 2013. All the while, under the watchful eyes, and efforts, of what I call the New Orleans Metal Trades big brother, the New Orleans Building Trades, in other words, us.
Had it not been for our efforts, there very well could have been no story to tell. To help insure that a publisher will take Nick’s manuscript to print it is important that he have some commitments to purchase the book, thus the reason for this request. Please consider and have your Union make a commitment, preferably specific in numbers as to how many of these books, again once published, you would be willing to buy. The anticipated cost will be approximately $20 per book.
Please respond to this request ASAP by letting us know how many books you will commit to purchasing, even if you cannot commit to any. You can send this information by email (tiger@gnoaflcio.com) or fax (504-482-6958) to the Building Trades office.
Thanking you in advance for your consideration and participation in this most worthwhile cause. I remain,
Leo Damaris

To all our brothers and sisters for IUPAT District Council 80 the time is NOW!!!! This presidential election along with other federal, state and local is the most important of our lifetime. Do we need or want a president who is with workers and their families or with someone who represents Wall St and Big Business? The choice is clear; we need a president who has the interest of the 99% at heart, not the 1%.
Over the past few years the Tea-Party and its ilk disguised as the Republican Party have waged war on workers. Look at Wisconsin, New Jersey, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana & Ohio. Workers and their rights have been violated. They've proposed legislation to strip workers of what they bargained for. In numerous state capitols these people are attacking our unemployment benefits, lowering or doing away with workers compensation and restricting our rights.
For the benefit of ourselves and families we may consider the following approach:
1. Register to vote, you and every person of voter age in your household
2. Engage in the interview process of local candidates
3. Do they support working families' issues?
4. Contact your district council office or local union for information concerning these candidates.
5. Vote and make sure every person eligible on your jobsite and in your household VOTES
As members of a craft union we need to consider what is best for our industries and our profession. We need to vote to protect our livelihood and enhance our ability to make a living. The paycheck we earn, along with the benefits our union negotiates is a family value.

TO: Herbert Santos Sr.
General Representative IUPAT
FROM: Local Union #49
DATE: August 24, 2011
SUBJECT: Thank You!
It's challenging time: corporations, and politicians wants to put the blame of this declining economy on the shoulders of our Unions. They mislabel the members' jobs and functions to appeal to their inadequacy. We, the Unions must continue to educate and advocate for the members. That is why, the Painter's Local Union #49 President, Sammy Mardis and members truly appreciate you for facilitating, strategic thinking and successfully convincing a local contractor to resigning as a union contractor.
Therefore, on behalf of the men, woman, and family members of this great local, we thank you for the unparalleled understanding of the union, negotiation, litigation, and support. We are so appreciative for your ongoing labor for the better of the Union.
We look forward to continue building a local union that will help being a service to you, District Council #80, and the AFL-CIO.
Sincerely,
Painter Local #49, Memphis, TN. Members

This past legislative session in Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee have been downright horrible for workers and the working families. Louisiana is still in session and the assault on workers and workers' rights continue in the same fashion.
Here is a sample of the disrespect we are being subjected to:
Alabama- a) the legislators voted to no longer hold dues check-off from public employees, b) restricted public employee unions from making political contributions, c) re-enforced laws with further restrictions on public demonstration (informational picketing and hand billing). Click for More

06/15/11 - Great Happenings in Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee Local Union 49 Spring/Early Summer 2011
It's been a busy time, new City of Memphis agreement for maintenance workers,
work picking up in the area, safety training and pin ceremony members with 35 +
years of service.
Three former Business Managers (Red West 50 years, William McCune 40 years
and current Local Union President Sammy Mardis 35 years) along with Vincent
Rowell 40 years and James Thomason 65 years received anniversary pins. Dinner
was held to honor our retirees. Both Brothers Rowell and Thomason are WWII
veterans. Not only do we honor their service to the IUPAT but the country as well. (pictured above)
It is a trying time for our members working for the city of Memphis, as we all
know for all cities and its employees; however we were able to reach new 2 year
agreement. It's imperative we work with the city to alleviate any laid offs or job
reduction.
OSHA 10 Training and Lead Awareness classes have been held (pictured above). Please remember
you need a current OSHA 10 card to get a job referral. For most, if not all
industrial jobs you will be required to have the OSHA training and pass urine
test, some are going to hair follicle test. It is our responsibility as members and
crafts persons to be able to meet these basic contractor needs.
The local is looking forward to creating a mentoring class/system to help our
Young members adapt to the current work environment and help them to become
assest to our local union. With the knowledge and power we can develop our
young lions and future leaders.
